Learning French – Apprendre le français by Rob

When I was at school in the late 80s, the time came for me to choose the subjects I wanted to study to GCSE. Some choices were easy, others not. I can remember looking at subjects in ‘group 4’. Which one would I choose? French was in there. I was doing well in the subject, but I was no longer enjoying learning it. I thought « I am never going to need French, so there is no need for me to study it! » Little did I know that I would end up marrying a French woman and move to France!

After we got married I started going to night school for 3 years. But life and babies took priority and the course’s aim was only for me to pass the test at the end of each year, which was not what I wanted! I didn’t want to pass tests, I wanted to learn French! So I decided to stop. 10 years later, I am living in France, taking lessons 3 times a week and I’m now working in a totally French environment. In all honesty, some days I have felt rather out of my depth.

In the Bible, there is a passage in Romans 12 that says: Dans la Bible, il y a un passage dans Romains 12 qui dit :

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "be transformed by the renewing of your mind" Résultat de recherche d'images pour "soyez transformés par le renouvellement de l'intelligence"

This passage has stayed with me ever since I heard a message based on it in my teens. This particular part has always puzzled me: how do I get my mind renewed? What does it mean to be ‘transformed’?  Over the years, I have come to understand this passage more and more, as God has been revealing it to me. Of course you should always read a verse in its context and I don’t pretend this is its only meaning. Especially, I am not going to preach at you!

I have always wanted to stay close to God’s will but I was never really sure if I have yet experienced the ‘renewing’ of my mind! Since our move to France, this particular verse has come alive to me in a real way. As I adapt to life here, it has become clear to me that I need to change the way I think! What do I mean? Isn’t it obvious? Well, I always thought that learning the French equivalent to the English words and stringing them together, by this I mean translating one language litterally word for word into another, would be enough. You may see this as naïve I know, but that was honestly how I thought.

In reality, I’ve discovered that my brain isn’t quick enough to do this when listening to someone. By the time I have finished translating the first sentence in my head, the speaker has finished sentence 10 and I have missed the rest of it! So I need to think in a new way. I need to be able to hear the words and understand them WITHOUT translating them back into English. But not even this is enough! When speaking, I actually need to be able to think what I need to say and say it straight away in French. Not, think it in English, construct the sentence in English and translate it into French! That is too slow! I need to be able to think in French!

But still, there is more! There are many, many rules and many, many (MANY) exceptions to those rules. For the moment I think of what I need to say, I think of the rules to apply, then I need to remember about the exceptions and finally I can speak. I need to actually come to being able to do all that instinctively! In other words, I need my mind to become French! I need to ‘renew’ my mind, like the verse said!

I feel that this will allow me to enter French life fully as it will open up so many doors. Instead of relying on Sabine to do all the official stuff and engage with our friends, I will be able to do it all by myself. I will also be able to understand what I am being asked to do at work without hand gestures and be able to express myself as I need to! Finally, this renewing of my mind doesn’t mean I am throwing away my Englishness, it actually means that I am adding to it!

Since writing this back in January, I’ve had about 6 months of lessons: this was me on my first day in September 2016 and leaving home for my last lesson in July 2017!

So, what can I say? I’m beginning to see a change taking place! Am I there yet? No, but I am encouraged by my progress : I am now able to write complete sentences correctly, even paragraphs! The next step remains to understand the locals and be able to reply fluently.

Although my progress isn’t as quick as I would have liked and at times I have been very frustrated, I can see that the opportunity of learning a new language while living in the country is far more rewarding than learning it in a more academic context. Will I ever become fully bilingual? Possibly not, however I want to be able to fully engage with our new life here and this why I keep going.

  1. I am encouraged by your courage. I experienced the same difficulty myself. After some time away from learning French and living in a francophone country, I find that I remember more than I thought. The words are still there and I can still sing my favorite song in French. Kids can learn faster but they can also loose the language faster. However, Adults find it more difficult to learn and it also makes a deeper impression into their brain. So I am less likely to loose what i have. I have to study to get back into the habit of speaking it to others, but my memory gives me the tools to put familiar sentences together.
